Fort Miles

Named after Nelson Appleton Miles, the last commander in chief of the United States Army, the massive coastal fortification was built in 1941 to defend Philadelphia, as well as oil refineries and other assets along the Delaware River and Bay. The sprawling fort and its armament were designed to fight the strongest elements of the Germany Navy, though that particular threat never reared its ugly head during the Great War. The Fort Miles Historical Association, formed in the summer of 2003 and now more than 400 members strong, has turned the fort into an incredible museum and artillery park dedicated to the World War II history of Delaware. World War II Observation Tower

One of Sussex County's 11 World War II–era concrete observation towers has been renovated and is open to the public at Cape Henlopen State Park. From the top, you can see much of the Delaware Bay and Atlantic Ocean coastline. On a clear day, Cape May, N.J. is visible. The tower is open during state park hours and is free to climb with park entrance fee. Call 302-645-8983 for more information.
